Visiting Po Toi Island
Everybody told me that Po Toi was a great place, famous for its hike and its seafood restaurant. We went to the south pole of Hong Kong in early October and had great and sunny weather; perfect for a small hike. My friend Magali (see her fashion portrait here) was part of the trip.
The difficult part about Po Toi is the ferry: be sure to check the times of ferry here, departing from Stanley and Aberdeen. Surprisingly, there are more ferries on Sunday than on Saturday. We took the ferry of 10 am on a Saturday and arrived one hour later there.
We’ve been to quite a few places in Hong Kong, but I must admit this island is a very ‘local’ one. You really have the feeling of arriving on an island, without much. I think the feeling was reinforced by the fact that the island faced the typhoon few weeks before and was a little bit devastated when we arrived at the port.
We did the hike and enjoy the landscape that reminded me of my French Provence with all these bright orange rocks and its dry nature. Many blogs on the internet talked about rocks that have specific shapes (Buddha’s hand for instance) but we didn’t find any that match the description… haha
We booked the famous seafood restaurant ‘Ming Kee’ but somebody indicated us the wrong restaurant that didn’t look welcoming at all… So, we left and had a great lunch in Stanley instead on the terrace of ‘The Boathouse’ followed by a quiet afternoon on the beach of St. Stephen’s Beach. There too, we saw the usual barbecue spots completely destroyed by the typhoon…
From Stanley Black Pier or Aberdeen Pier, by ferry
