High Island Reservoir East Dam

Jan 30, 2019

Located in Sai Kung and being part of the Maclehose trail section 1, the High Island Reservoir East Dam is another proof of great work humans can achieve to preserve their environment. It is also a nice hike or walk in the country park. Let’s go!

We went to the entrance of the country park with the motorbike and decided to take the lazy way: go to the reservoir with a taxi. It is only a 20 minutes ride from the park’s entrance whereas the hike takes 3 hours. The road we took with the cab was not really magnificent and we saw many people walking on concrete to get there, so we had little regret to not have walked.

One of the best parts of the walk is to observe the city’s hexagonal rocks brought there as part of the dam. I think each of those rocks weights 1 ton. All of them being there creates a kind of #mysterious scenery…. Remember they were brought here to prevent a giant wave to destruct and take the dam away.

The other strange thing to observe is those S-shaped rock columns resulting from volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. Those are one of the typical wonders to admire in Hong Kong, natural beauties that were classified by the UNESCO.

We had the chance to quickly catch a cab to come back. Before entering the Geopark, ask for the specific times of minibusses at the dam and/or you may take the number of the taxi that will bring you there to call it when returning as the place may be #crowded and taxis rare to find in the late afternoon.

A quick lunch and walk in Sai Kung and we were back in Sheung Wan by 5 pm with the motorbike. A great walk fon a cloudy Sunday that will probably amaze you and make you discover another surreal part of Hong Kong.
