Beach Clean-Up, Shap Long Beach

Aug 9, 2018

We always have a lot to do during our week-end, being in Hong Kong or anywhere else. But when my friend Katrien invited me to organise a beach clean-up on a Saturday, I said ‘yes’ immediately. I am trying to adopt a more eco-friendly behaviour every day, and when we see that beaches in Hong Kong are filled with trashes of all sorts, it really saddens me.

This good cause event happened last Saturday and I can only emphasis my dear friend’s organisation. She planned everything from gathering people, finding the beach, contacting the Government, to cooking delicious snacks for our post-effort time. Thanks again Katrien!

First, we took the fast ferry to Mui Wo, Lantau. Then, as no taxi was circulating this afternoon, we hired a private minibus that drove us directly to this ‘hidden beach’, located just behind Pui O beach. First, some of us took a quick but refreshing bath in the water (not the cleanest ever I must confess) before starting as it was hot, around 35 degrees. Carrying plastic bags and wearing gloves we scanned the sand for bottles’ caps, buried ropes, scrapes and other trashes…

As you can see, satisfying results on the pictures above! As a reward, we indulged ourselves with some great handmade food and top-notch drinks before taking the first ferry back directly from the adjacent pier to Mui Wo at 7pm and then to Central.

If you want to join the next session, It should be in September when the weather will be better. Reach out to me to join us and start to make Hong Kong beach one of the best in the world!
